Trading Paint on the Internet

Nascar RacingThere is a phrase you here often in NASCAR about what happens in races. Its a euphemism for bumping or even wrecking into one another, they call it “trading paint”.

Everyone is on the Internet with some goal in mind. It may be as simple as sharing pictures with friends to being as involved as launching the next great startup. Although the finish line is different for many of us, we are still racin’ on the same track and occasionally we trade paint.

I traded paint with someone recently but not in the real negative sense. I thought I was heading in the one direction when in fact I wasn’t. OK I have pretty much worn out the analogy. We had traded emails. I am advertising Yougler for the past few months on his blog and I asked him if he ever considered covering it in one of his posts. He responded that he thought his readers would use Yougler more if it incorporated a mail forward like his site used. “What?!” I thought, “Yougler is built around mail forwards!”

From euphemism to epiphany. If he of all bloggers didn’t know what Yougler was fundamentally, how can expect anyone else to get what Yougler is? Yougler IS a mail forward. It is a PORTABLE mail forward that is INDEPENDENT of the web sites you use it on. But I realized, I talk mostly about profiles that you can build around the mail forward. Upon reflection, I rarely used the term “mail forward”. I talk about blocking spam and so on and if you read all the information I have provided it should be apparent what Yougler does is in essence a mail forward on wheels, yet I never really call it a mail forward.

So I am changing my message from here on out. Yes Yougler is still about profiles, White Pages Search Engine Optimized Profiles, Blogging Profiles, and so on but from now on “profiles” is second thing I say after I say “portable mail forward”.

Finally there is a lesson here that I knew but I always seem to forget. People rarely read much of what they pull up in their browser. No wonder with all the information there is out there. So if you are marketing something new, you only have a moment or two to get your message across and it can’t depend their ability to speed read. Refine your message to what is critical for a prospective user to know from the start.
